For the fifth consecutive day, Tirana became the epicenter of the revolt against the government. Young people, students and citizens took to the streets of the capital to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. This Saturday's protest began in front of the Ministry of Education, then moved towards the Prime Minister's Office, while throughout the day there were continuous clashes with the police, interventions with tear gas, injured people and escorts.
Around 11:00, protesters began gathering on Durrës Street. Unlike later developments, the first few hours were characterized by a calmer atmosphere. Some young people exchanged greetings with police officers, while one protester raised the indigenous flag on the wall surrounding the Ministry of Education.
There was no shortage of symbolic messages among the crowd. A suitcase was set on fire as a symbol of immigration, while a young man dressed in a panda costume held a banner reading "Do not abuse students."
Beyond political appeals, protesters also spoke about the reasons that had brought them to the streets. Unemployment, low wages, high rents and the inability to afford living expenses were among the most common concerns. Students pointed out the difficulties of pursuing their studies in parallel with working, while others raised concerns about the quality of education and the lack of opportunities for young people.
“We graduate from university, but we can’t find a job,” was one of the messages that summed up the dissatisfaction expressed during the rally. The demands were not limited to the resignation of the prime minister, but also included a change in the political class and the creation of better opportunities for the younger generation.
But the atmosphere changed after noon. In front of the Ministry of Education, the first clashes began between some of the protesters and the police forces. Railings and paving slabs were placed on the street, while the officers intervened with tear gas and pressurized water. Within a few hours, the protesters dispersed and regrouped in the streets around the ministry.
At this stage, the use of rubber bullets by the police was also reported, as footage published by the media showed an officer using such a weapon. Meanwhile, ambulances intervened to provide assistance to people who showed health problems during the rally.
After four hours of standing in front of the Ministry of Education, the protest took a different direction. At around 3:15 PM, citizens began marching along the “Martyrs of the Nation” Boulevard, heading to the Prime Minister's Office.
In Korça, the protest took place along the city's pedestrian street. The young people marched with the chants "Join us" and "Edi Rama, resign." Among them was the teacher of the "Themistokli Gërmenji" high school, Leonidha Puqi, who joined the students and called for peaceful protests.
In Shkodra, citizens also continued their march on the main streets towards the Municipality. During the protest, the police escorted several young people, who were later released. Among them was a 10-year-old child.
Thus, the fifth day of protests ended with a series of developments in the capital and other cities, while the government's resignation, economic conditions, education, and the future of young people remained at the center of the demands.
From the morning's banners and symbolic messages, to the march along the boulevard and confrontations with the police, the October 17 protest marked another day of civic mobilization, with demands that continued to be articulated outside of Tirana.
