Former Juventus player Traoré: "I live on an island, there's nothing. I wake up, drink a coffee and do muay thai or jiu-jitsu"

Armand Traoré was one of those players who briefly appeared on Juventus' horizon and then disappeared. The French left-back of Senegalese origin arrived on loan from Arsenal, aged just 20, in the summer of 2010.

It was a disastrous season for Juventus, who were still struggling to rebuild after Calciopoli. A seventh-place finish for Gigi Delneri's side marked the end of a difficult period before a record-breaking run of nine consecutive league titles began under Conte and Allegri.

Traoré was truly unlucky, not only because he arrived in an environment that was not at all favorable for a newcomer, but also because three injuries limited him to just 12 appearances: ten in the championship and two in the Europa League. Today, having just turned 37, Armand leads a completely different life. He lives on an island where, as he says, “there is practically nothing”, and has dedicated himself to martial arts.

Armand Traoré today, at the age of 37: football is far away

Traoré arrived at Arsenal from France at a very young age, but failed to settle in London, either before or after his loan spell at Juventus. His career after leaving the Gunners was also mediocre: QPR, Nottingham Forest, Cardiff and a difficult experience in Turkey with Çaykur Rizespor, from which he left as a free agent in 2019, after being sent to the Under-21 team.

Then there was a brief return to Cardiff: a few months without a single appearance, after just one appearance for Rizespor, and the termination of his contract by mutual consent in January 2020. From that moment on, no one asked for him again, even though he had just turned thirty. In 2021, Traoré decided to hang up his boots and dedicate himself to something completely different.

After the Covid pandemic, Armand moved to a remote island in Spain to process the end of his career and overcome a mental health crisis. He found solace in the practice of muay thai and jiu-jitsu, rediscovering the most authentic meaning of existence: morning coffee after waking up, training, children, friends, grilled meat on the beach, dogs and family. “A simple life is the best life,” is his motto today.

Former Juventus player Traoré: "I live on an island, there's

“When you retire, it’s like you’re being forced out,” Traoré says, using a strong image. “A lot of people immediately think, ‘Oh, these players earn so much money a year.’ But it’s not about that. It’s about the mental health of another person, about trying to understand who they are and that they might be going through difficulties.

"For former footballers, I think it would be positive to have someone call them and ask: 'How are you? How are things going?' Because when you end up talking to a helpline for people with mental health problems, sometimes you come across unexpected numbers. For example, I've had to call and find out that they didn't know I was a footballer. But if someone knew that and had seen a lot of similar cases, it could be useful."

Traoré has not kept in touch with many of his former football friends. One exception is his former Arsenal and QPR team-mate Jay Emmanuel-Thomas. The pair met again in London last month to promote “A Night To Remember III,” a charity boxing event set to take place on October 22. At the event, Armand will take to the ring to face former Tottenham defender Sebastien Bassong in a challenge that will pit two teams of former footballers playing the role of boxers. Judging by the footage circulating, both Traoré and Bassong have maintained excellent physical form.

Veton Surroi: The crisis in Albania in seven points

One solution would be to create the legal and political conditions for free and fair elections next year. For the elections to produce a way out of the crisis, a special package of electoral guarantees should be prepared that, among other things, would limit in advance the influence of illicit money, the misuse of state resources, and inequality in access to the media.
