The battle with the flames in Greece continues for the third day in a row. The most difficult situation is on the islands of Crete, Paros and Lesbos. The fires have caused casualties among firefighters, damage to homes and farmland, as well as the evacuation of residents and tourists. Over 200 firefighters, aircraft and teams supported by the European Union and volunteers from the Red Cross are engaged in extinguishing the largest fires.
According to the Fire Risk Forecast Map of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, a very high risk of fire outbreak (category 4) is predicted in Attica, Crete, Western Greece, the Aegean, the Cyclades Islands, Evros, as well as in areas of the Peloponnese and Central Greece. The Fire Department calls on citizens to avoid any activity that could cause a fire, stressing that, under the current weather conditions, even a small outbreak could develop into a new uncontrolled fire front within an instant.
As the battle to bring the flames under control continues, the prosecution has also launched an investigation into the huge fire on Paros, which burned more than 12,000 hectares. According to local authorities, the cause of the huge flames is the management of waste at the island's landfill. For his part, the mayor of Paros denied any responsibility.
Civil Protection is on alert, but at the same time it asks citizens to be particularly careful, due to the very high risk of fire in many areas of the country.
