"I lost both my wife and my son. They were going to work, I don't know what happened... I lost everything. I felt something was wrong and I called them, but they didn't answer."
With these touching words, the husband of the 43-year-old woman and the father of the 21-year-old Albanian described to the media the great pain he is experiencing after the tragic road accident that occurred on Friday morning on the Amfipoli-Drama provincial road, near the Paleokomi area in Serres.
Within moments, he lost his wife and son, who had left early in the morning for work.
According to Greek media, the family was originally from Albania and had lived in Paleokomi for years. The 43-year-old woman and her 21-year-old son worked for the same company, on the beach of Ofryni, and on Friday morning were traveling together to work.
They were traveling in the same vehicle, with the young man at the wheel and his mother in the passenger seat. At around 07:30, the vehicle collided head-on with a truck, a collision that proved fatal for both.
What does the truck driver declare?
The 56-year-old truck driver has given his version of the moments leading up to the fatal accident. Speaking to Greek media, he stated that he was driving normally in his lane at a speed of around 75-80 km/h, when he suddenly saw the vehicle in which the mother and son were traveling lose control and cross into the opposite lane.
"I was driving normally in my lane at 75 to 80 kilometers per hour, as much as is allowed in that segment. Suddenly I saw a car coming towards me. It seemed to have lost control on the way down from the Little Soul area," he said.
According to the 56-year-old, he tried to avoid the collision by swerving to the left, but did not have time to avoid the impact.
"The car had crossed into my lane. I saw the driver trying to regain control of the steering wheel, while I tried to move to the left to avoid it, but I couldn't. It hit me and the tragedy happened," he added.
The truck driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to Drama General Hospital for medical attention. Police forces, two fire engines and emergency teams responded to the scene, working to extract the victims and manage the situation.
Greek authorities are continuing investigations to determine the exact causes and circumstances in which the tragic collision occurred. /TCH
