Following the approval of the loan agreement under the American Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program, the United States Embassy in Tirana has also reacted.
Through a post on social media, the embassy announced that the agreement will support Albania's progress towards fulfilling the Hague Defence Commitment, which envisages increasing defence spending to 5% of Gross Domestic Product by 2035.
" Today, the United States is pleased to announce Albania's ratification and signature of a new $302 million loan under the Foreign Military Fund (FMF) program, which will support Albania's progress toward meeting the Hague Defense Commitment, which calls for increasing defense spending to 5 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2035 ," the US Embassy in Tirana said.
The agreement was not voted on by the Albanian opposition, which complained about the expedited procedure by which the majority passed it for a vote in parliament. After that, the opposition complained about the agreement to the constitutional court in an attempt to overturn it due to the procedure it considers unconstitutional.
