Andi Bushati: Why did Rama's campaign against oligarchs arouse fear?

The “Flamingo Revolution” shook society’s way of thinking. Today, being one of the people who benefits from the autocrat is no longer seen as an honorable man, but risks becoming a hated character. This was proven by the wave of reaction against the millionaires of Rama’s court.

Flamingo Revolution/ The Guardian Editorial: Albanians protest to protect their

The British newspaper The Guardian has dedicated an editorial to the protests that have been taking place in Tirana for more than a month, describing them as the largest revolt of civic discontent in Albania since the fall of the communist regime.

According to the article, what started as a protest for the Zvërnec protected area has transformed into a civic movement, known as the "Flamingo Revolution", which is now demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and a change of government.

The Guardian writes that citizens' dissatisfaction is related to the lack of transparency in tourism projects supported by strategic investors, including the US president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and Ivanka Trump, which, according to critics, endanger protected areas such as Zvërnec, the Narta lagoon, and Sazan Island.

The article points out that Prime Minister Edi Rama has continuously defended these investments, stating that they will not be stopped.

Protesters, on the other hand, say their dissatisfaction is linked to corruption, lack of accountability and disappointment with the political class. The analysis also notes that the protests have also attracted participation from Albanians living abroad and have similarities to civil society movements against corruption in other countries in the region.

The article also focuses on the reactions of several MEPs, who have called for the suspension of construction in protected areas and have warned that the project could have consequences for Albania's accession process to the European Union.

In conclusion, The Guardian writes that the protest has transcended the issue of environmental protection, turning into a broader debate about Albania's development model and how large investments in the country serve whom.
