A macabre event has taken place in Mystras in the Peloponnese region of Greece. Greek media report that a 55-year-old man hid his dead father's body in a refrigerator for at least 2 and a half years in order to collect his and his mother's pension, who had passed away years ago.
The case was discovered when the Laconia police department was given information that the elderly man, born in 1936, had not been seen for a long time. The police called the missing man's 55-year-old son and took a statement from him, in which he claimed that his father had left and was living in Athens.
However, police investigated the 55-year-old's claim and questioned his sister, who lives in Athens, who told them she had not seen her father for years, who lived with her brother.
After that, a search was carried out in the presence of a prosecutor at a hotel owned by the 55-year-old, which was closed and which he used as a residence. The body of the 90-year-old was found dead in a refrigerator in the basement. In addition, during the search, an air pistol was found and confiscated.
The 55-year-old was immediately arrested and when questioned, confessed to the horrific act. He claimed that the 90-year-old had died two and a half years earlier of natural causes and that in order to continue receiving his pension, he had put him in the freezer and not declared his death, as required by law. At the same time, he discovered, he was also receiving his mother's pension, which had previously died, and whose beneficiary was his father.
A forensic doctor and a special team will perform an autopsy on the body. A criminal case has been filed against the 55-year-old man for perjury, repeated fraud and violation of weapons legislation. He will be brought before the prosecutor, while the preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Prosecution Office and the Sparta Criminal Investigation Department. ©LAPSI.al
