The Portuguese government is following up on the murder of Portuguese tourist Luis Miguel Varela Mendes in Ksamil, who was found stabbed to death in the early hours of Tuesday near the 'Principotes' beach bar.
The Portuguese media outlet "Renascença" writes that the Portuguese Foreign Ministry has been in contact with the Albanian authorities, but so far there is no official information about what happened and the actions taken by the authorities in Tirana.
Raquel Trindade, from the office of the Portuguese Foreign Minister, told "Renascença" that the case is being followed up through the Portuguese embassy in Rome and the honorary consulate in Tirana.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is following the case of this Portuguese citizen who lost his life in Albania and, through our embassy in Rome, as well as the honorary consulate in Tirana, we are following up on the matter with the local authorities. At the moment, we still do not know exactly what happened. From local media we know that there have been arrests, but at the moment we still do not have information through our network that we can follow up on. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to follow up on everything that is necessary, both with the local authorities and with the family members," Raquel Trindade told "Renascença".
According to "Renascença", referring to Albanian media, 11 people have been arrested in connection with the murder of the 20-year-old Portuguese man.
Portuguese media also write that the main suspect in the stabbing is a 29-year-old man who has a record in the United Kingdom for offenses related to drug trafficking, weapons possession and dangerous driving.
