Dozens of citizens gathered in Poliçan this Thursday to protest against the plan to merge their municipality as proposed by the Socialist Party. The Socialists propose that this municipality be merged with Berat along with Dimal.
"You took our children away, now you want to wipe us off the map," read one of the banners held by protesters, who demand that Poliçan remain a separate municipality.
According to the draft for Territorial Reform 2.0, submitted to the Assembly by the Socialist Party, the Municipality of Poliçan is expected to be merged and joined with the Municipality of Berat. This change is part of the plan to reduce the number of municipalities in Albania from 61 to 46.
The mayor of Poliçan has also expressed reservations against this proposal, stating that the merger of small municipalities will lead to the depopulation of cities.
Residents insist that Poliçan should continue to function as a separate municipality and oppose its inclusion in the Municipality of Berat. /LAPSI.al
