Albania seeks to precede the NATO summit that has been announced to be held in Tirana next year by increasing military spending to 2% of GDP.
Lapsi.al learns that the call for the session on July 30 in Parliament, even though this session has ended, is precisely related to the approval of an Albania-US agreement, which will also be reviewed next week in parliamentary committees.
So far, there is little information about the agreement. The majority has kept the matter confidential, but sources close to the Assembly told Lapsi.al that it is a deal worth around $300 million for various military equipment and weapons.
So far, Albania spends 1.6% of its GDP on defense. To avoid any reservations that could affect the organization of the NATO summit in Tirana, the government is rushing to sign an agreement, which at the moment is not known whether it will be in the form of a loan or a direct purchase from the state budget revenues.
